Welcome to what i hope will become an ongoing creative project, talking about our lives in creative ways, that documents our fight as sick and disabled people to be recognised and accepted in a society that is being fed lies by a govenrment set on pushing back the hard won but limited rights and independence we have.

This poject is about celebrating our sense of community, strength, solidarity and humanity.

I am just one voice and alone i whisper but when i raise my voice with others we shout. As a quilter, I love finding just the right fabric to piece together a quilt. Quilting has a long tradition of community and togetherness, each person making a squre and piecing it together to produce a piece of art that has practical uses too. Piecing was done colelctively, where stories were told, news was shared and the sense of belonging was reneforced.

I hope others will join me to create a "Spartaci Quilt" But unlike traditional methods this quilt can be a tapestry of life, using words, poetry, pictures, stories, paintings, photographs, quilt pieces, knitted squres etc  this can all go into a  1st vibrant piece entitled

"alone we whisper Together We Shout"

If you would like to take part please comment below, or send me a message. There is no time scale and Im hoping others will help me create it. Perhaps if enough of us come together with a square or even another idea maybe we will have enough to create a gallery to share with others and perhaps inspire them to find thier voice.

Want to join in

Make a square or produce a piece that could be mounted onto a piece using fabric pens, iron on trasfer etc

Each Piece needs to be a maximum of 8" squares allowing a 1" boarder (so we dont loose any design)
If your idea is bigger than 8" please feel to create or piece up to 4 squares together.

Im hopeful this idea can take shape and we can come up with more ideas. Im hopeful the finished peice could go on dispaly somewhere and maybe even get hung in the York Quilting Museum. who knows the skys the limit.

  2. Hi Helen a square is litterally that. its an 8" x 8" square. so anything you write needs to fit on that or on 2 pieces so an 8" x 16" - lol sure thatd as clear as mud :)

  8. I'm in, not sure what size yet, probably using my photography, if i can get it onto fabric! when you say we can use 2 or 4 squares, can it be all in one piece? (as opposed to 4 joined together?)

Also think it would be a great idea to create a "quilt" that can go up online - not an actual quilt, but a kind of collage of people's work on the screen, for those who can't do actual fabric pieces.

Also, if anyone's good at creating visual stuff online maybe we can have a 'Poetry Book' - so it looks like an actual book where you can turn pages & everything - where people can have poetry displayed?

Also, same idea except a 'Photo Album' for people's photographs.

    1. Hi Fiona,

Great ideas :) In terms of the pysical quilt, Id say having an image that could be accross 4 sqaures its hard to "see" until i have everything together. 4 squares of one image might look great or might dominate lol im not being helpful am i..the photo transfer paper is A4 size so it would have to be 2 pieces.

I love the idea of an online quilt and a photo gallery - perhaps can make different project like our own Take Heart Gallery.

Is that soemthing you could help with, photography is a tad beyond me :)

    3. Tee hee I do know someone who might well be up for the challenge. did my waffle make sense. I think a full 16" x 16" suare of one image might be too big. but again till i see it all together i cant tell. :)

  10. Hiya,

What a great idea! But I'm brand new here, but I'd really like to get involved with the virtual quilt.

I'm a poet/writer/artist type person and if you'd like to see some of my 'stuff' it's here - http://merlynhawk.deviantart.com/gallery/

So where do we go from here?

    1. Hiay :)

depending what medium you deicide to use so if its a poem please email me at bethkmorris@gmail.com and i can then print it on fabric paper and incorporate it into the quilt when i have enough.

      Or

email me if you want to make a physical piece and I will give you my address :)

Id also love to start making papges with contributions so i could pop up a poem and we can make a gallerly etc

im open to ideas to. Id liek to collaborate work and maybe make a few people authors so they can work on it too

  11. Ooh, interesting idea! I'm a disabled quilter, and if the OpenID hasn't worked you can go and see my work at www.lobsterdesigns.dreamwidth.org.

Having done a block swap before and seen where confusion can come up, could I make a suggestion about this? I think people are going to be confused by the 8" with 1" border thing, even the quilters and especially the non-quilters. Did you mean 1" seam allowance, or did you mean that 1" on the inside should be a border? I've never heard of 1" for a seam allowance, usually it's 1/4" all the way around, so that the total size of the square would be 8.5". I think the easiest thing would be for you to put up a diagram showing which bit is the seam allowance and which bit is 8", otherwise you are going to get 8" unfinished size turning up as well as 8" finished. Which can often be sorted out with block bordering and sashing, of course, but it's rather a nuisance.

Since you're not setting a finishing date and don't know how many people will join in, are you planning on a quilt-as-you-go approach?

    1. Hiya,

wow your quilts are amazing :)
you are absolutely right about me not being very clear on sizing - i knew what i meant but my foggy brain didnt make it clear - I knew what i meant but didnt explain myself very well ooops.

I will do a how to size the square and post it up so its totally clear what i whittering on about.

Im coming round to the idea of a deadline - so people ahve some aim although as i hope it will be an ongoing project its a flexible aim. End of September means I have a month or so to piece it before the winter kicks in.

:) I think im feeling a tad its more popular than i thought eeep so need to get my head round it.
Until I see what i get its hard to know what design to use, i love art quilts but possibly a more traditional block might work will know once i have stuff.

thank you any tips or idea would be great - I feel a little OMG what have it started going on

    2. Try chatting to people who have participated in, or better yet hosted, block swaps, and get tips from them. The top post on my quilting blog shows what I made from the one swap I was in, where I asked for any size as long as it was square or rectangular (and still had to square up a few blocks quite considerably). Sort of mix of traditional and modern, in the end, with a bit of a theme to it (female sexuality, done at a very stylised level - it was going to the charity Forward UK so that was appropriate).

Anyway, I overdid it the other day and am now doped up on painkillers, so I think I will wait until I am more with-it to comment further. Although I do know some good communities on LiveJournal you could mention this on, such as quilting and chroniccrafters.

I love the page background, by the way. I am all about spirals and tree-like spirals, and orange and pink work so well together.

  12. Oooh this is exciting! Earlier today I was cutting up fabric to make some bunting, not having made anything crafty for a long time, and decided to keep the bits aside for a patchwork. What a pleasant coincidence that I found your project today too. I would love to get involved in some small way (and find out if I can still sew!) Brilliant idea! I have a friend who is very poorly and she passes the time embroidering, sewing and making beautiful things. Will see if she would like to join in. This is going to be wonderful! :)
