Inkwell Leeds Tuesdays 11am-1pm

A Space for #Spartiquilt

The lovely chaps at Inkwell Arts in Leeds have made a space available for people who may wish to meet with @Fibro_girl and I, in order to do a bit of sewing of the #Spartiquilt and of course, to drink tea and have a natter.

When do we meet?

We plan to meet every Tuesday (except Bank Holidays) from 11am to 1pm, but you can drop in whenever you like during that time, you don't have to book and you don't have to stay for the full 2 hours!

Getting to Inkwell Arts by Bus

Inkwell was the Old Shoulder of Mutton pub on Potternewton Lane.
You can catch Buses no 2,3 or 3a from Leeds city centre, the bus stop is located opposite the Grand Theatre on New Briggate. The service runs frequently during the day with buses approximately every ten minutes.
You will need the stop at Chapel Allerton Hospital. A short walk further up is Potternewton Lane on your left. Once on Potternewton Lane, Inkwell is only a very short walk away and located, again, on your left.

Access to Inkwell Arts

Access to the place could be better. There is an attached car park. There is an external step to negotiate (approx 12cm high) but they have told us they will be getting a removable ramp to help us wheelies get around!

Inside (it's an old pub) there is another step (more like 20cm) if you want to go down to the balcony overlooking the garden (for a fag, for instance) so we really need the ramp! I can stagger it cos it's only a few steps, but it does rapidly use spoons.

The loo is on the ground floor and you dont need to navigate any steps to get there. Its a reasonable size, too.

They do have drinks available, no sign of snacks, so bring one if you need to fill up regularly!

There are other groups going on in the space at the same time, its a creative space for people run by Leeds Mind, so it can be a bit noisy, but they are very good at responding to people's needs if you need a bit more quiet.

So come, enjoy, make merry, make the #Spartiquilt!

Spartici and not in Leeds?

If you don't live in Leeds but would like to start a similar physical meet-up with fellow Spartaci to contribute to the #Spartiquilt, then get in touch- we will do what we can to help you!

Square size?

Thanks to a brillaint quilter - im in awe who very wisely pointed out i hadnt been very clear in my size requirements - I can but blame a combination of "i knew what i meant I just didnt explain very well" coupled with foggy fibro brain resulted in me being as clear as mud. So lovely creative peeps rather than try and explain again i have drawn what im on about :) let see lol

Your finished squre needs to be 8"

Get an old cerial box and draw an 8" squre make sure you add a seam allowance - this is a good template and stops you going too far wrong see picute 2

As you can see a standard seam allowance for quilting in 1/4" the 1st solid line surrounding the squre - but as people are using all sorts of mediums from photo's - crochet to allow for this you can have a maximum of 1" seam allowance the dotted line.

If you are knitting for instance your square must not go outside the 8" square - this is what we call the finished square size. I hope that helps explain it a bit better

This is very much  a work in progress im not a proffessional quilter and thankfully there are far more skilled people than me offering advice..

I can add more photos if that would be helpful

News updates and FAQ

The number of folks getting involved is slowly growing and spreading, thank you all for telling others about it. In addition to this blog we now have a space to chat and throw ideas around in the spartacus forum

http://www.spartacusforum.org.uk/forum/index.php we are in the Community Action section called Spartaci Creatives - check us out there and come and chat and get those creative juices flowing.

We have a great hashtag now for it #Spartiquilt - thanks to Marilyn for the idea

I was asked about the types of fabric that could be used?
good question :)

the answer is try not to use anything lighter than a sheer net curtain type of fabric (we can mount it on an unbleached calico) and don't do heavier than a thin denim as my sewing machine wont cope.

Personally i would try to aim for a cotton or poly cotton, calico or linen type fabrics. if your knitting, crocheting, painting or using a photo then your square can be mounted so just concentrate on making your square.

Different fabrics with textures is find, i would avoid really stretchy fabrics unless you mount them for stability.

I hope that helps

Happy stitching come join us in the forum - and please send us a photo of anything you have created so far we would love to see your ideas
